Showerthought: my grocery bill hit $58 a week for 3 people and I thought that was impossible
Back when I first moved into my place in Toledo around 2019, I was spending close to $140 a week on food for just me and my roommate, and I told myself that was normal. Fast forward to now with a kid and a tighter budget, and I somehow got our weekly grocery run down to $58 for three people, which honestly shocked me when I added it up on the receipt last Sunday. The big thing that changed was buying dry beans and rice in bulk instead of cans, and I started planning meals around whatever was marked down instead of picking recipes first and shopping for them. I also stopped tossing the ends of veggies and started freezing them for stock, which sounds small but it adds up more than I expected. My mom did a lot of this stuff when I was a kid and I rolled my eyes at it, but here I am doing the exact same thing. The number surprised me because I always thought feeding a family cheap meant eating boring food, but we had chicken and dumplings twice this week and nobody complained. Curious what weekly number other folks with kids are hitting, because I feel like there is still room to trim.
