PSA: Stop buying those giant bags of rice without checking for bugs first
Last month I grabbed a 20 pound bag from the discount grocery on Elm Street, figured I was saving like $6 compared to the regular store. Got it home, opened it up, and there were these tiny little weevils crawling all over the top layer. I didn't notice until I'd already dumped some into my rice cooker. Had to toss the whole bag and scrub my pantry shelves twice with vinegar. The thing is, the discounted bulk bags sit on pallets for weeks, and nobody checks them. Now I always inspect the bag seams and look for any powdery residue before buying. Also, I freeze any rice I buy for 48 hours before storing it in a jar, kills the eggs. Has anyone else had this happen with the cheap bulk bins, or did I just get unlucky with that batch?
