My neighbor laughed at my $1.50 lentil soup, then asked for the recipe

Last Tuesday I was stirring a pot of lentils with carrots and onions from the discount bin at Aldi. My neighbor Rick peeked over the fence and said, "That smells like something my grandpa would eat during the Depression." I shrugged and told him the whole pot cost less than a dollar fifty, and I'd be eating it for three days. He tried a bowl later that evening and asked me to write down the recipe, but he still insists real meals need meat. Has anyone else convinced a skeptic with a cheap bean or lentil dish?

Aldi sells lentils for less than a dollar, but your math is off on the onion.
