My big pot of chili turned into soup halfway through cooking

I was making a double batch in my slow cooker last Tuesday to freeze some for later. I added the usual two cans of beans and a can of tomatoes, but I forgot to drain the liquid from the beans. After four hours, it looked more like a bean soup than a thick chili. I didn't want to waste it, so I mixed in a cup of cornmeal from the back of my pantry and let it cook for another hour. It thickened right up and actually tasted really good. Has anyone else saved a meal with a simple pantry item like that?

Oh man, that cornmeal trick is smart! I once tried to make a cheese sauce and it was just a thin, grainy mess. Totally panicked because I had pasta ready to go. I remembered seeing something about using a slice of American cheese to help with melting, so I tore one up and stirred it in. It actually worked and saved dinner, even if it felt a little weird. What's the weirdest thing you've ever thrown in to fix a dish?
