My aunt's $2 meal tip almost landed me in the ER

She swore by using expired canned goods to save money - I ate a dented can of beans from 2022 and spent 3 hours throwing up last Saturday. Has anyone else had a family member give dangerous budget advice like that?

Did your aunt grow up during some serious wartime rationing or something? My buddy tried his grandma's "just scrape the mold off" yogurt trick and ended up with a nasty case of food poisoning that kept him in the bathroom for two days.

That "just scrape the mold off" yogurt trick is exactly the kind of thing that sounds fine until it's not. My father in law used to do the same with bread, just tear off the green spots and make toast. The thing is, mold roots go way deeper than you can see, especially in soft foods. He never got sick from it but we had to throw out half a loaf of bread he had "saved" because it was basically a science experiment in there.
