My $2.50 bag of lentils turned into a 4 hour kitchen disaster last night

I got this idea to make a big batch of lentil soup on Sunday to save money for the week. Picked up a bag of dried green lentils from Aldi for like $2.50, seemed like a steal. I tossed them in the pot with some carrots and onion, let it simmer, and then got distracted by a YouTube video about vintage tractors. Four hours later I came back and the whole thing was this thick, black, burnt sludge stuck to the bottom of my favorite pot. The smoke alarm went off and my neighbor knocked on the door asking if I was making tar. I still ate the top layer that wasn't scorched, honestly not bad for basically free. Has anyone else ruined a dirt cheap meal in a spectacular way?

Funny how the stuff we try to make last forever ends up wrecking the exact thing we were trying to save, like the pot or the time or the whole dang day. Maybe it's just me, but burnt food has a way of teaching you more than any fancy recipe ever does.
