Just realized frozen veggies beat fresh for my weekly budget meal plan
I spent the last two months eating my way through a comparison in Denver, cooking the same stir fry every Thursday with fresh produce one week and frozen the next. Fresh bell peppers and broccoli from the local market cost me about $11 per batch, while the frozen bags ran me $4 for the whole thing. What really got me though was the texture, I always assumed frozen would get mushy but if I toss them straight into the hot pan from the freezer they stay crisp and actually hold up better than the ones I'd buy on Sunday and use by Thursday. The fresh stuff would start looking sad by day three, which pushed me to either waste it or rush through meals I didn't enjoy. Frozen also let me buy in smaller portions, so I stopped tossing half a head of cauliflower that went bad in the fridge drawer. I did notice the frozen mix had more onion pieces than I'd pick myself, so I started adding a fresh carrot for crunch and that balanced it out. Has anyone else done a direct side by side like this, or figured out a good trick for making frozen spinach or green beans work in a pinch?
