Ate at that famous dollar slice place in Manhattan last week and walked away disappointed

Everybody raves about the $1.50 pizza spots near Penn Station, but the slice I had was greasy and the cheese slid right off after two bites. If I'm spending my lunch money, I'd rather pay $3 at a local spot with better quality - has anyone else found a budget place that actually tastes good?

Back in 2019 I spent like $12 on a slice at some tourist trap near Times Square and it was somehow worse than airport pizza. The guy behind the counter actually shrugged at me when I complained.

Dollar pizza is a NY institution for a reason and you're missing the point. You don't eat it for the quality, you eat it because it's hot, fast, and cheap after a night out or when you're between trains. I've had some of the best slices of my life at those grimy counters at 2am when nothing else is open. The $3 slice might taste better but you're paying for the atmosphere and the experience of standing on the sidewalk folding a slice in half. Sometimes greasy cheese sliding off is part of the charm, not a bug.
