A guy at the Dollar Tree in Gary sold me dented cans for 25 cents each and I've been shopping wrong my entire life
He pointed at the little dents on the seams and said those are the ones that get pulled off the shelf, but as long as the seal is good they cook exactly the same. I walked out with 14 cans for $3.50 and made chili for four days straight. Does anyone else have a store that quietly sells the "ugly" stuff cheap, or is this just a Midwest thing?

Those little dents on the seams are exactly where the seal fails, not where it stays good. That seam is a folded crimp under pressure and any bend in it means the rubber lining inside can't do its job. The guy selling you cans out of a Dollar Tree parking lot isn't doing you a favor, he's moving product that got flagged for a reason. And if a dented seam lets even a tiny bit of air in, you get botulism, which you cannot see, smell, or taste, and it puts people in the hospital. Saving two bucks on chili isn't worth rolling those dice for four days straight.
