Tried that cold smoke hack with a cast iron pan full of wood chips

I was super skeptical when a buddy told me to put wood chips in a cold cast iron pan right on the coals to get smoke without heat. Tried it last weekend with some pork belly and it actually worked. The pan stayed around 150 degrees and dumped out this clean blue smoke for almost 4 hours. Has anyone else messed with indirect smoking setups like this?

My first attempt at that trick ended with me explaining to my wife why the smoke detector was screaming and the backyard looked like a fog machine convention. Turns out dumping damp wood chips into a hot pan just makes a mess and zero smoke. Four hours of clean blue smoke sounds like a win compared to my half hour of chaos.
