Rant: My boss just killed my chance at a BBQ trophy

I was all set for the local pitmaster showdown this weekend. My manager knew about it for weeks. Then he drops a surprise overtime shift on me for Saturday. Now I can't even fire up my smoker. This job keeps getting in the way of my real passion. I'm about ready to walk out and start my own stand. So tired of choosing between a paycheck and perfect ribs.

Last year's brisket took 14 hours and came out like a brick. My dog wouldn't even eat it, and he once tried to swallow a sock whole. So maybe your boss did you a favor by saving you from potential public shame. Tbh I'm the reason my friends suggest ordering pizza for cookouts now. At least with a missed contest, you still have the dream of perfect ribs. I just have the reality of being a grill menace.

Honestly that line about choosing between a paycheck and perfect ribs hit me hard. So many bosses act like your real life just stops when you clock in. Tbh if you're already thinking about your own stand, maybe that's the sign to seriously plan an exit. They'll always drop last minute shifts because they don't value what you do outside work. Ngl your barbecue passion sounds way more important than any job that would do that.

Hey, steady pay beats risky passion projects any day.
