My uncle swore by a mustard slather before the rub on pork shoulders.
I told him he was nuts, then tried it on a 12-pound butt for the fourth of July - the bark came out way darker and stuck better than any straight rub I've ever done. Has anyone else tried this, or did I just get lucky with that one cook?

Man I had the exact same reaction when my buddy told me to try it. Called him crazy but figured what the hell. First time I used a yellow mustard slather on a butt I couldn't believe how much darker and crispier the bark turned out. Stuck like glue even when I wrapped it. You're not crazy, that trick is legit.
