My patio project turned me around on brick smokers

I always said brick smokers were too hard for my backyard. Helping a buddy put one in while he fixed his patio made me see the good points. Who knows about caring for brick smokers long term?

Alright, brick smokers need regular care. Seal the bricks every year with heat-resistant sealant. Keeps water from getting in. Clean the grates after each use to stop rust. Check the mortar for cracks each season. Patch cracks fast before they spread. A cheap cover during bad weather makes a big difference.

Forgot about the firebox area, that's where my bricks cracked first. Had to replace two with refractory ones from a fireplace shop. Also threw some steel replacement plates over the worst spots, helps spread the heat.
