I think competition BBQ judges favor sweetness too much

I was looking at the score sheets from the American Royal last year and saw that a brisket with a heavy brown sugar and cherry coke injection scored 178 out of 180. Meanwhile a salt-and-pepper-only entry from Texas scored 168. Has anyone else noticed the judges lean towards sweet over beef flavor?

Maybe judges just crave sugar after tasting 30 other salty meats in a row.
