That $450 photography course taught me nothing I couldn't learn free on YouTube

I dropped $450 on an online photography class last spring and the instructor literally read slides for 6 hours. The one useful tip about lighting came from a 10 minute video by some random guy in Toronto. Anyone else regret paying for stuff that's freely available, or do structured courses actually work for some people?

Six hours of slides still beats three weeks of rabbit holes trying to piece together random tips from strangers. YouTube gives you fragments, but a course forces you through the boring basics in order, which is where the real skill building happens. That lighting tip might have stuck because you already sat through the boring stuff first.
