PSA: putting my monthly bill due dates on a whiteboard by the door saved me about $80 in late fees
For years I was paying late fees like clockwork, probably $80 worth over the past year alone, just because I kept forgetting which bill was due when. My system was a mess, some on autopay, some I paid by hand, and a couple that only send paper bills. Back in January I hung a cheap dry erase board right by my front door and wrote every due date on it in order, with the amount next to each one. The first week I walked past it and felt kind of dumb, like it was too simple to work. But here is the thing, seeing 'electric, 12th, $96' every single morning just stuck in my head way better than any app notification I ever ignored. I have not paid a single late fee since, and last week I caught a bill that was due in 2 days that I would have totally spaced on before. Curious what low tech stuff has actually worked for you all, or am I just late to the party on this one?
I read somewhere that writing stuff down by hand makes your brain hold onto it better than typing, and your whiteboard thing kind of proves that. Something about the act of writing it out and seeing it in your own handwriting makes it stick more than a phone buzz you swipe away. Maybe it's the whole reason boring old paper lists still work for people.
