I used to think you had to go to a mechanic for everything, but a guy at AutoZone changed my mind

My check engine light came on last Tuesday and I was ready to drop $150 at the shop just for a diagnosis. Then this older dude in the parking lot at AutoZone on Broadway asked if I'd checked the gas cap first. I laughed but sure enough, it was loose and the light went off after a few drives. He also showed me how to use their free code reader for next time. Now I wonder how many simple fixes I've paid for that I could have done myself. Has anyone else saved money by just asking someone at a parts store before calling a mechanic?

My buddy replaced his own alternator after watching a YouTube video in the AutoZone parking lot, saved himself three hundred bucks.

YouTube university strikes again. My brother did the same thing with his starter last year. Saved himself a ton and the car still runs fine.

My buddy did the same thing with his brake pads. Worked fine for a month.
