I finally tried haggling at a garage sale and got a weird result

I tried to talk a guy down from $20 to $12 on a beat up camp stove at a garage sale on Saturday in Reno. He just stared at me for a second and said take it for free if I promised to actually use it instead of reselling. I learned that some people care more about stuff going to a good home than making a few bucks. Has anyone else had a seller just give you something like that?
