Found out 90% of graphic designers are self-taught and now I'm rethinking college

I was looking up stats on that creative bloq website and saw this number. It blew my mind because my cousin just spent 40k on a design degree. Part of me thinks real world practice beats a classroom. But then I wonder if a degree still helps with getting hired at big agencies. What do you all think? Did you go to school or learn on your own?

Honestly I think people make too big a deal out of this stat. My neighbor has a design degree and works at a national ad agency making 65k a year. Another guy I know learned youtube tutorials and freelances for small businesses for maybe 30k. Neither is rich or famous. Your portfolio matters way more than a piece of paper but that 40k degree opens doors at places with HR filters. So really it depends if you want to work for a big boring agency or do your own thing. Not exactly life changing either way.

@black.patricia read this somewhere. Big agencies screen for degrees. Small gigs don't care.
