Can we talk about short shifting for better gas mileage
Everyone keeps saying to redline every gear for performance. But I found a trick that actually works for saving gas. I shift at 2,500 RPM instead of 4,000 in my old Honda. Got 38 MPG on my last commute across Denver. My buddies laughed at me for driving like a grandpa. But I tracked it for two months and saved about $60 on fuel each time. Problem is, does this mess up the engine long term? Anyone else try this and see real numbers?

Huh, I mean that's actually pretty solid fuel economy you're getting there. But one thing - short shifting at 2500 RPM probably won't hurt your engine long term unless you're lugging it really bad. Lugging is when you're at low RPM and floor it, like trying to accelerate hard at 1500 RPM. That loads up the bearings and can cause detonation. Just keep the throttle light when you're shifting early and you'll be fine. I've been short shifting my old Civic for years and it still runs smooth, no weird noises or anything.

Yeah @cameronwest I back that. Lugging is way worse than shifting a little early. It's that deep bogging sound you feel in the seat. I blew a rod bearing in an old truck doing exactly that. Just feather the gas at 2500 and the engine doesn't even break a sweat.
