Rant: My reality TV marathon opened my eyes to producer manipulation

I was glued to this dating show last night, and every single argument happened right before someone got sent home. It SMACKED me in the face that the crew must be prompting people or cutting scenes to make stuff look worse. In my regular job, I see how things are built to work a certain way, and if one part is off, the whole system fails. TV is the same, they take a normal disagreement and EDIT it into a screaming match. It bugs me SO much because it's dishonest storytelling. Now I can't watch without noticing the shady cuts and the dramatic music swells. It honestly ruins the magic, but I guess I see the strings now. Makes you look at real-life gossip totally different, you know?

Oh man, I used to totally buy into all of it... the fights, the tears, everything. Your post just clicked for me. I never really stopped to put it together how every big blow-up happens at the perfect time for the plot. Now that you say it, it's so obvious they're building a fake story with all that editing. Kinda feels like they think we're dumb for not seeing it before. It does ruin the fun a bit when you see the tricks.
