My view on park apps shifted after getting lost without service.

I now always download offline maps before any park visit.

Oh man, getting turned around in a dead zone sounds terrifying! I agree with @lucaskelly about how crucial offline maps are. I use Gaia GPS because it lets me download super detailed maps with trails and creeks marked. I always check the date on the map layer before I go to make sure it's recent.

So, that's a smart move with the offline maps. What app do you usually use for downloading them, or do you just rely on the built-in phone features? I got turned around once in a state park (total dead zone, no bars at all) and it was not fun. How detailed are the maps you download, like do they show trails and water sources? Just curious if you've found any tricks to make sure the maps are up-to-date before you head out.
