I finally get why old timer drivers swear by the greasy spoons
Ngl I was sitting at a Pilot in Flagstaff last month, this guy in the booth next to me tells his buddy, 'you can trust a place that burns the coffee.' I thought that was just a joke until I watched the cook drop a frozen burger patty on the flat top and scrape up yesterday's grime with it. Heard the old timer say he checks if the bathroom key is on a real ring or a zip tie, if it's a ring the place cares enough to not lose it, and that got me thinking about my own 12 years stopping at truck stops from Ohio to Nevada. The shiny new chains always have the cleanest showers but the food tastes like it was made in a lab, while the beat up mom and pop places with the cracked parking lot somehow nail a breakfast that hits different after a long haul. I used to only hit the big name places for safety, but now I'll stop at a random spot in Tucumcari or Elko if the lot has at least three rigs parked, that's my new rule. Even got a decent omelet at a place with a hand painted sign that said 'eat here or we both starve' and it beat any chain meal I paid double for. Has anyone else noticed the size of the parking lot gravel or the number of ASHTRAYS out front actually predicts the quality better than any app review?
