Why the best meal I had last year wasn't from a secret spot

I used to seek out hidden food joints all over the city. But the most memorable dinner I had was at a well-reviewed place everyone knows. Are we too quick to dismiss popular spots in favor of hidden ones?

The_nina is right about places being popular for a reason. We chase hidden spots for a special story, but often the well known spots got that way by being good and reliable every single time. That dinner you remember probably happened because the kitchen has its system down perfectly after serving so many people. A hidden gem can have an off night, but a busy popular place has to bring its best over and over. Sometimes the real find is the place that always makes you happy, not the one you have to hunt for.

Hang on, are you saying busy places never have off nights? Because I've definitely had some mediocre meals at places everyone raves about.
