Hot take: Neighbors used to wave, now they just complain about the dust.

I miss the days when folks understood the work and didn't call the city over every little thing.

Ugh, this hits home. We had the exact same dust complaint when we refinished our deck. What finally worked was just walking over with a six-pack on a Friday evening and talking it out (awkward, I know). I explained the project timeline, and he admitted the dust went right into his open garage. We agreed I’d give him a heads-up before big sanding days and hose down the driveway after. Honestly, just that little bit of talking (and a free beer) fixed it.

My friend got a nasty letter from the city last month... all because he was sanding an old dresser in his driveway. The neighbor behind him called it a "dust nuisance." The funny part is, that same neighbor spent all last weekend pressure washing his siding, sending mud and gunk all over my friend's car. Nobody called the city on him though.

My old neighborhood in Phoenix had dust storms that would coat your car in a solid layer of grit. That was a real problem. A little sawdust from a weekend project just doesn't seem like the same level of emergency to call the city over. People used to handle this stuff with a quick chat, not a formal complaint. It feels like we've lost the ability to tell the difference between a real issue and just normal life happening.
