A client in Portland told me she wanted a 'mom cut' and it made me think

I was doing a simple trim for a regular named Lisa last Tuesday, and she just casually said she wanted something easy, a 'mom cut'. It wasn't about the style she described, but the way she said it, like her identity was just being a parent now. I realized we hear that kind of thing all the time, 'mom hair', 'corporate cut', and it's more than just hair. How do you guys handle clients who define their cut by a life role instead of what they actually want?

That phrase really shows how people can shrink their own world down. It's not just about hair, it's about giving up a piece of themselves to fit a role. Maybe the best thing we can do is ask a simple follow up question. Something like, "Okay, so tell me what 'easy' looks like for you." It gently pushes past the label and gets back to the person in the chair.

My barber in Austin said he gets a lot of dads asking for the "dad special," which is just a buzz cut to hide thinning hair. It's the same idea, hiding behind a role instead of talking about the real issue.
