I finally saw the same barrel crown mistake three times this month

Every time it's someone trying to fix a grouping issue by messing with the scope or the load, but the real problem is a dinged-up crown. Last week a guy brought in a rifle that was shooting 4-inch groups at 100 yards, and sure enough, the muzzle looked like it got dropped on concrete. A clean 11-degree recrown with a hand tool brought it back under an inch. It's such a basic check, but people skip right over it. How do you guys usually walk a customer through checking their own crown before they bring it in?

Ever think a bad crown was just an old wives' tale?

Honestly, I just tell them to look for any nicks or dents right at the muzzle.
