Appreciation post: I just read that a 1911's slide only moves about 0.003 inches when the hammer falls

Saw it in a technical manual from the 80s and it blew my mind how precise that lockup is. Anyone have a favorite 'tiny detail' about a classic action?

That's a lot of precision for a hundred year old design.

Actually, the basic design is old, but the manufacturing is super modern. The tolerances they hold now are way tighter than anything possible back then. It's like comparing a hand-drawn map to GPS... the idea is similar, but the execution is on a whole different level. Modern CNC machines and quality control make parts fit together with almost no slop at all.
