Update: Saw a person vanish in a parking lot and now I'm stuck with a moral call
I was finishing up a late fence job yesterday. A woman walked to her car and then she was just gone, like she blinked out. Her car keys were lying on the asphalt where she stood. I picked them up without thinking. Now I don't know if I should tell anyone or just drop them at the police station and forget it.

Totally agree with the other reply here. Did the exact same thing with a wallet I found in a grocery store cart. Felt like I was in some weird limbo just holding onto a stranger's whole life. Handed it to the tired cashier at the customer service desk. Felt better immediately knowing it was their problem to solve. Just turn those keys in, it lifted a weight off for me and probably will for you too.

Well, finding a lost cell phone in a park once left me with the same kind of choice. I brought it to the nearest community center, and they had a system to return it to the owner. Doing that lifted the weight off my shoulders completely. Just turning in those keys to the police might give you that same relief.
