A customer in Seattle asked me why I always wear the same pair of gloves

I was doing a big storefront replacement job downtown last month, and this older guy who owned the shop next door kept watching me. After a couple days, he came over and just pointed at my hands and said, 'Son, I see you with those same gray gloves every morning. You got a thing for them?' I laughed and told him they're just a basic pair of Wells Lamont leather gloves, but they're broken in just right for handling glass and setting stops without losing feel. He nodded and said his dad was a glazier too, and he always said a good pair of gloves is like a good knife, you don't swap it out just because it's old. That little chat stuck with me, maybe because it was about more than just gear. It felt like a nod to the small, personal habits that make the job work. Do you guys have a specific piece of gear you've used for years just because it feels right?

My buddy's a carpenter and he's had the same tape measure for a decade. The numbers are worn off but he says he knows its pull by heart.

That's just asking for a mistake... worn off numbers means guessing on fractions, and even a tiny error can ruin a whole project. New tape measures are cheap, and relying on memory seems like a weird point of pride when accuracy matters. It might work for rough cuts, but anything precise needs clear markings.
