That trick with vinegar on limestone worked better than I expected

Saw a guy on a trail in Missouri mention he uses a 50/50 water and vinegar mix to clean buildup off limestone samples. Tried it on a chunk I found near the Ozarks and it took off that white crust without damaging the surface. Anybody got other cleaning tips for sedimentary rock?

Funny how the simplest things work best, isn't it? Vinegar cuts through mineral deposits but leaves the rock itself alone if you don't let it soak too long. Kind of makes you wonder what other everyday household stuff we overlook for simple solutions.

Everyday household stuff" is right. I once used plain old ketchup to clean tarnish off some copper bottom pans. The acid in it did the job better than the fancy polish I bought at the store. Worked faster too, just had to rinse it off real good after.
