I thought the whole 'petrified wood' thing at that Arizona tourist stop was a total scam.

We pulled over at a place near Holbrook on Route 66 that had a huge sign. I figured the colorful logs were just painted concrete. But the owner showed me a fresh cut piece under a hand lens, and the cell structure from the original tree was perfectly clear, turned to solid agate. That specific detail changed my mind completely. Has anyone else been genuinely surprised by a tourist trap geology spot?

Totally get that feeling. I almost drove right past that petrified wood place myself for the same reason. It's wild how a single piece of real proof, like seeing those tiny details up close, can flip your whole view. Makes me want to stop at more of those weird roadside spots just in case.

Yeah, it's funny how often the real thing gets written off as fake just because it's in a cheesy spot. I had the same thing happen at a roadside cave where the stalactites looked like plastic until you touched one and felt that cold, damp mineral build-up. Makes you wonder what else we miss because the presentation seems too tacky to be real.
