Go with the sledgehammer, basalt chips too easy with a chisel.

I used the sledgehammer on a big basalt slab last weekend and it split clean on the first hit. The chisel takes way more patience and you end up with uneven pieces. Plus the sledge lets you control the break pattern better if you hit at the right angle.
