My neighbor's oak table went from trash to treasure in a single weekend

He was about to throw it out because the old varnish was cloudy and sticky, but I told him to try a chemical stripper and a light sand with 220 grit. After two coats of a simple oil finish, the grain popped like I've never seen. What's your go-to method for bringing old oak back to life?

Honestly, that "trash to treasure" line is my whole life now. I pulled a dresser off the curb last month that looked like a lost cause. Tbh, I skip the chemical stripper because my kids are always underfoot and the fumes freak me out. I just go straight for a heavy sanding to get all the old gunk off, then hit it with a gel stain. It takes a bit more elbow grease, but the results are just as good.

Used to hate oak until I saw that trick.
