Thought the whole 'cold email' thing was just spam until I landed a $2k project from one.

Totally get that, used to ignore them too. The trick is making them not feel like spam at all. You gotta research the person or company and mention something specific you liked about their work. Keep it short, show you can solve a problem for them, and link to one solid example of your stuff. Most people send generic copy-paste messages, so a real one actually stands out.
