Switched from bidding blind to asking for budgets first
I used to guess what clients could pay and throw out a number first. That ended badly last spring when I quoted $500 for a logo project and the client said they had $2,000 set aside. Now I just ask "What range were you thinking?" before I say anything. Has anyone else gotten better results by letting the client name their price first?

Yeah I read somewhere that letting them name the number first actually works because people tend to overestimate what you'd charge. That $500 to $2000 jump must have stung though, ouch.

Happened to me too. I said $800 for a branding package and turns out they had $3,500 ready to go. Letting them name the number first is honestly the smartest thing I ever started doing.
