A client in Phoenix wanted me to fix their website at 3 AM last Thursday

I got a frantic email from a new client saying their whole site was down and they needed it up before a big sale started. I dragged myself out of bed, logged in, and spent an hour checking everything. The server was fine, the code was fine. I finally asked them to send a screenshot of what they saw. They sent a picture of their own phone, which was just on airplane mode. They had turned off their wifi and cellular data and thought the internet was broken. I told them to turn airplane mode off and the site loaded right up. They still paid me for the 'emergency call' but I felt kind of bad taking the money. What's the weirdest non-problem a client has ever called you about?

Honestly, that payment was earned the second you answered that 3 AM email. The weirdest part to me is someone being up at that hour, messing with their phone settings, and then deciding the whole website is broken. My non-problem stories are usually people mixing up their login emails, but that airplane mode one is a new classic. Don't feel bad about the money, you solved their real panic even if the cause was silly.

Did you ever find out why they were on airplane mode in the first place?
