Vent: I picked up a free couch from a listing in the Free Stuff Alerts for my area in Portland

The post said it was in good shape, but when I got there with my truck, the whole bottom was soaked and smelled like wet dog (it had been left on a porch for a week of rain). I learned to always ask for a current picture, not just trust the old one in the post. Has anyone else had a free find turn out way worse than you thought?

Man that's such a bummer, sorry that happened. I got burned on a free dresser that looked fine but had a huge hidden crack. Now I make a point to ask for a quick video call before I head over, just to see the item live in the current space. It feels a little awkward at first but it saves so much time and gas. What kind of truck were you using, was it a pain to get it loaded just to find out?

You know, I actually think asking for a video call is a bit much for a free item, @kelly.daniel. It puts a lot of extra work on the person giving it away. I'd rather just accept that free stuff is a gamble and factor in the wasted trip as part of the deal. I've found most people are honest if you just ask for a couple more clear pictures of the specific spots you're worried about.
