Update: I tried a 50/50 mix of old sand and new for a core mold last week.

Everyone at our shop in Cincinnati says to always use fresh sand for cores, no question. I had a small job and thought I'd save a bit by mixing in half of our cleaned, reclaimed stuff. The core looked fine going in, but it crumbled during the pour and ruined the piece. I learned that for cores, the bond strength is just too critical to mess with, even if the sand looks clean. Has anyone else found a way to safely reuse sand for core work, or is fresh really the only way to go?

Honestly that seems a bit extreme. We've mixed in a small percentage of reclaimed sand for simple cores before without issues, maybe like 10-15%. The key is how clean it actually is, like did you run it through a proper reclaimer or just shake it out.

Right, @jana_lewis16, clean reclaimed sand is a total game changer.
