Took a tour of the old ironworks downtown and noticed their sand mix setup

I stopped by the old Iron City Foundry on 5th Street yesterday, they do tours now. I was looking at their muller and realized they're using a different clay percentage than we do at our shop, like 6% instead of our 8%. The guy running it said they get less scabbing on heavy castings that way. Has anyone else tried dropping the clay content on purpose?

We dropped to 7% at our shop last year and it cut our scab rate by nearly half on the big stuff. Just watch your green strength when you first change it over.
