PSA: Switched to a new sand mix for our greensand molds about 6 months ago
We were getting a lot of surface defects on our castings, maybe one in five had to be reworked. Our supplier in Toledo suggested we try their 85/15 blend with a finer base sand. The difference was clear after the first week... way fewer gas holes and the finish is smoother. Anyone else have luck with a specific sand mix for aluminum work?

I used to think the sand didn't matter that much. Seeing results like that would prove me wrong fast. A good mix is clearly worth the switch.

Oh man, I wish I could say I was that smart. We just kept using the old stuff and fighting with it for like a year before I finally asked someone. Our 70/30 mix was basically just making fancy aluminum sponges.
