Showerthought: I heard a customer at the market say 'real florists only use local flowers'
I was picking up peonies at the Seattle flower market last Thursday when I overheard a woman telling her friend that a true professional would never use imported stems. It got me thinking. On one side, local blooms are fresher and support nearby farms. On the other, imports let us offer things like protea or certain orchids year-round. Where do you all stand on balancing local sourcing with variety for your arrangements?

Honestly, I just use what looks best for the job.

Last year I did a wedding in December where the bride wanted ranunculus. Nothing local here in Michigan at that time. I had to get them from South America. The look on her face when she saw them was worth it. Sometimes the perfect flower for the moment just isn't growing in your backyard. Limiting yourself to only local stuff can really hold back your creative ideas.
