Warning: I snapped a derailleur hanger on a trail in Boulder last Tuesday and had to walk my bike 5 miles back to the car.
What's the best way to check a hanger for alignment before a big ride, besides just looking at it?

Just eyeball it, it's not rocket science lol.

Eyeballing it works fine until you need things to be even a little bit exact. It's the kind of advice that can lead to a real mess, @the_avery. Some tasks actually do need proper measuring. Calling it "not rocket science" just brushes off the need for any care at all.
