Vent: My chain snapped on the trail outside Bend and I had to walk 5 miles back to my car.

I was 15 miles into a ride on the Phil's Trail network when it happened, and now I'm wondering if anyone has a good method for checking chain wear before a big ride, because my old ruler trick clearly didn't cut it.

Man, that walk back from Phil's sounds brutal. The chain checker tool @the_jordan mentioned is fine, but honestly I've seen those give false readings too. My method is to just replace the chain every six months like clockwork, no matter what. It's cheaper than a new cassette and way cheaper than a long walk pushing a bike. I keep a spare in my gear bag and swap it out on a lazy Sunday. It's not fancy, but it's never let me down.

That walk of shame back to the car is the worst. After a similar hike-a-bike, I just bought a cheap chain checker tool. The ruler method always seemed fuzzy, but that little tool gives a clear yes or no. I check mine every few months now, takes two seconds. It's saved me from a repeat of that long, awkward walk.
