Showerthought: The time I cut a plank too short on a big job in Denver

I was trying to fix a creak in my old Trek's headset for months, tightening and re-greasing it over and over. A mechanic at the Boulder Bicycle Works finally showed me how the bearing race was actually pitted and needed replacing, which fixed it instantly. Anyone else had a noise that just wouldn't go away until you found the one weird part?

Honestly, that reminds me of a weird click in my old car's front end. I chased it for like a year, replaced the sway bar links twice. Turned out it was just a single, totally loose bolt on the strut tower brace, the one thing I never checked. I mean, you look right at it, but you assume it's fine. Felt like such an idiot when I finally found it.

Months? You were messing with that for months? I would have lost my mind after a week. A pitted race is such a tiny thing to cause that much trouble.
