Showerthought: My friend said 'just take it to the shop' about a flat tire
I was at the park yesterday and got a pinch flat on my rear wheel. My friend who was with me just shrugged and said 'that's what shops are for, man, just take it in.' I mean, it's a tube change, maybe 10 minutes and 8 bucks for a new tube. It got me thinking about how quick we are to pay someone else for simple fixes. Has anyone else had someone act like basic bike maintenance is some kind of rocket science?

Man, that attitude drives me nuts. It's like we've forgotten how to do anything with our hands anymore. I get it if you're in a rush or really don't know how, but a flat tire is the perfect place to start learning. You end up paying way more for the labor than the part itself, and then you're still helpless if it happens again miles from a shop. That simple fix builds confidence for other stuff, too, like adjusting your brakes or cleaning your chain.
