Showerthought: I used to think my chain was fine until it snapped on the Burke-Gilman Trail last month.
A shop guy told me to check for stretch every 300 miles with a $10 gauge, and mine was totally worn out. Anyone have a favorite brand for that tool, or is a ruler just as good?

That shop guy's 300 mile check interval is way too long for most riders. I check mine every 100 miles or so, especially after wet rides. A basic ruler with the 1/16 inch marks works perfectly fine, you just measure 12 links pin to pin.
