I finally gave up and paid a shop $120 to fix a simple brake squeal...
I spent a whole Saturday trying every home remedy I found online, from sanding the pads to wiping the rotor with rubbing alcohol. The noise just got worse and I ended up with a warped rotor from messing with it too much. What's the one simple thing I probably missed that would have saved my weekend and my cash?

Man, the "warped rotor from messing with it too much" part hits hard. I've been there, turning a small noise into a huge repair. That squeal is so annoying you just want to make it stop. The one simple thing is almost always the brake pad shims or clips. They get bent or lose their grease. A five dollar tube of brake grease on the back of the pads and the contact points quiets it right down. It's the one step all those online guides seem to skip over.

Yeah that bit about the online guides skipping the grease step is so true. I used to think squealing meant the pads were just cheap or worn out. But after reading what @lucas206 said, I tried the grease on the shims last time and it was dead quiet. It's crazy how such a small thing gets overlooked. Makes you wonder what other simple fixes we're all missing.
