Unpopular opinion: that plumber's putty vs silicone debate is overblown
I see everyone pushing silicone caulk for sink drains now, but I swapped my bathroom faucet base plate 3 years ago in Nashville and used plain old plumber's putty. It's still holding tight with zero leaks or cracks. My buddy redid the same job with silicone and had to redo it after 18 months because it peeled off. Has anyone else had better luck sticking with the old school putty?

Wait, @davis.emma, are you saying yours actually peeled? That's rough, and I feel for you. I've had putty hold up way longer than I expected, especially in humid places like Nashville where summers get sticky. My buddy who used silicone had the same problem you're talking about - it just wouldn't stick right after a while, maybe because of how much the base gets bumped around. I'm not hating on silicone for everything, but for sink drains and faucet bases, the old putty has never let me down.
