Old timer at the hardware store told me to tighten faucet nuts counter-clockwise
Met this retired plumber named Bill at Ace Hardware in Austin last month while buying a new cartridge. He watched me struggle with a video on my phone and just said 'turn it the wrong way first, son, you're chasing threads.' Has anyone else had a random stranger save them from over-tightening a valve?

Ha! Bill sounds like my kind of guy. I once tried to fix a leaky faucet and ended up rounding off the nut so bad I had to call a plumber anyway. Guess I was chasing threads in circles.

The part about rounding off the nut so bad - man that hurts just thinking about it. @drew_chen, you must have been gripping that thing like it owed you money. I've done similar stuff with rusted bolts on my truck. Snapped a ratchet clean in half once. That was a bad day. Nothing worse than making a simple job into a 200 dollar plumbing bill.
